Privacy Policy
DarkGrid Hunt is a hunting map for iPhone and the web (app.darkgrid.cloud). This policy explains what we collect, why, who else is involved, and how to delete it. The short version: we collect only what the app needs to work, we don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and we don't use third-party analytics or tracking tools. We keep our own basic usage counts so we can see what's working (below).
What we collect
| Information | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address and name | Your account: signing in, account emails (codes, welcome, account changes), and showing your name to people in your hunting party. |
| Sign in with Apple identifier | If you sign in with Apple, we keep a link between Apple's identifier and your account so Apple can sign you in. If you choose "Hide My Email", we only see Apple's relay address. |
| Hunt areas, waypoints, stands and tracks you save | Stored in your account so they sync between your devices. Those in a shared area are visible to its members. |
| Hunting party membership, friends and chat messages | So your party can share areas and message each other. |
| Your paired Meshtastic radio's node number and name | If you pair a radio, so your party sees your name instead of the radio's ID on messages and positions. |
| Your subscription: plan, renewal date and status | To give you access after the free trial. Payment is handled by Apple or by our payment processor (see "Payments"). |
| Radio-only members you add | If you add someone who carries only a radio, such as a child hunting with you: the nickname you give them, their radio's ID and model, and the latest position your party's radios hear from it, so your party can see them on the map. We don't collect their name, email or contact details. |
| Your position while you hunt with a party | So your party can see where you are (see "Your location"). |
| Rifle and load profiles you save | For the range and holdover tool, synced between your devices. |
| Your radio's original settings | A backup taken before the app first changes a radio you pair, so you can put them back. |
| Radio diagnostics you choose to send | Only when you tap Send to Foridian, to work out why a radio didn't work. They list connection steps and settings, never message text or positions. |
| Requests to map an area in detail | The county and the spot to within about 1 km, so we can add it and email you when it's ready. |
| Usage information | App version, when you use the app, counts of map tiles loaded and radio activity, and, rounded to about 1 km, which areas you look at on the map and the places you search for. We use it to decide which areas to map next and to fix problems. It's kept for 90 days. |
| Server and sign-in logs | Each request to our servers and each sign-in is recorded with your account, the time, what was requested, the app version, your IP address and the general area it comes from (city and state, and a point rounded to about 35 miles). We use them to keep accounts secure and to fix problems. They never include your email address, what you send or your position, and are kept for 90 days. |
| Notification settings and your device's push token | To send the alerts you turn on, such as when a draw or lottery hunt opens. |
Your password is held by our sign-in provider; we never see it.
Your location
- The iPhone app uses your location to show where you are on the map, to record tracks you start, and to warn you near the boundary of a hunt area if you turn that on. It keeps running in the background only while you've started a hunt or are recording a track, and iPhone shows the location indicator while it does.
- When you're not hunting with a party, your live location isn't sent to us. A location reaches our servers only when you save it: a waypoint, a recorded track or a hunt area.
- While you're hunting with a party, your phone sends its latest position, heading and battery level to our servers whenever it has signal, so your party can see you. Only the latest position is kept. When the hunt ends, your party can still see where you were last for 24 hours, unless you turn that off in the Party sheet.
- If you pair a Meshtastic radio, your position and messages go by radio to your party's radios. A party member's app may relay what it heard to the rest of your party over the internet, and may save positions and tracks it received to your shared area.
- Usage information includes the map areas you look at and the places you search for, rounded to about 1 km. It never includes your live position.
- To show conditions for a hunt area (season, legal shooting hours, wind), our servers send that area's location to public weather and mapping services. Your name or email is not sent with it.
Payments
You can subscribe in two ways. In the iPhone app, the subscription is an App Store purchase billed by Apple to your Apple Account. On our website, it's paid through our payment processor's secure checkout page. Either way, your card details go to Apple or to the payment processor, not to us: we never see or store card numbers. The payment processor also asks for your billing address, or at least your ZIP code, to work out any sales tax.
We keep only what we need to give you access: your plan, renewal date and payment status, plus a reference to the purchase (an App Store transaction ID or a payment processor customer ID). Apple tells us when an App Store subscription renews, changes or ends. Apple and the payment processor keep payment records as the law requires.
To change or cancel an App Store subscription, use Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone. To change or cancel a website subscription, use Account → Manage subscription.
Services that help run the app
We use a small number of service providers, each only for its part of the service:
- A cloud hosting provider runs our servers, stores your data in the United States, handles sign-in and sends our emails.
- Apple provides Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases and push notifications.
- A payment processor handles subscriptions bought on our website.
- Map, elevation, weather and address services, many of them government agencies. Map images, searches and conditions for a hunt area all go through our servers, so these services see our servers, not your device, your name or your email. (Versions of the iPhone app before 1.0.1 load some map images directly from these services, so they see that device's IP address and which map area is being loaded.)
- An AI service may help us find each state's official season pages. It only receives state names and public web pages, never information about you.
We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't share it for advertising. We'd disclose it only if the law requires us to.
Who can see what
- Your hunt areas, waypoints and tracks are private unless you share an area.
- Members of an area you share see its waypoints, stands and tracks, with the name of whoever added them.
- Your party sees your name and the messages you send to the party.
- A small number of Foridian staff can access account information when needed to run the service, help you when you ask, and keep accounts secure.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in the iPhone app (Settings → Account → Delete account) or on the website. Deletion is immediate and permanent:
- Your account, hunt areas, waypoints, tracks, chat messages, friends, radio-only members, rifle profiles, radio backups, diagnostics, usage information, notification settings and push tokens are deleted, and you're signed out everywhere.
- A website subscription is cancelled immediately (no further charges) and your saved payment methods are removed from our payment processor.
- An App Store subscription is billed by Apple, so deleting your account doesn't cancel it. Cancel it first in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or Apple will keep renewing it.
- If you signed in with Apple, the link between your Apple ID and your account is deleted. To remove DarkGrid Hunt from your Apple ID too, go to Settings → your name → Sign in with Apple on your iPhone.
- Shared areas you own pass to the member who joined earliest, or are deleted if nobody else is in them.
- Waypoints and tracks you added to areas other people keep stay with those areas, labelled with your name followed by "(inactive)".
- Your name is removed from any requests you made to map an area; the request itself stays.
- We keep a record that the account was deleted (with no personal details) so it can't be used again. Server and sign-in logs, which never contain email addresses, expire after 90 days.
- Copies kept so we can recover from mistakes are removed within 30 days.
You can also ask us to delete your account or send you a copy of your information by emailing support@foridian.com.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS) and at rest, stored with our cloud hosting provider in the United States. Access to map data and your account requires signing in.
Children
DarkGrid Hunt is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. An adult may add a child who carries only a radio as a radio-only member (see "What we collect"); the child has no account, and we keep only the nickname, radio and latest position the adult's party sees. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll post the new version here with a new effective date. For significant changes we'll also tell you in the app or by email.
